With so many areas of interest in Durban to see, Florida Road is a good place to start as it is famous for all things happening and stylish. Only in the past 15 years or so has the pavement café society truly established itself in Durban. Before that strict liquor license legislation kept patrons off the pavement however once they relaxed, it was not long before restaurants took advantage.
Built in 1890 and home two years later to South Africa’s first municipal horse drawn tram, once predominately residential, Florida Road is now overwhelmingly commercial and professional. There are only two single-storey houses holding out as residential properties and most of the remaining buildings are over 60 years old. A sensible town planning strategy ensured that some fine examples of architecture were preserved.
Florida Road has two heritage landmark’s, both declared national monuments in 1989. Hollis House was built by and for building contractor Jack Hollis, who arrived in Durban in the late 19th century from Australia. The grand property has housed a number of different commercial entities since then. In 2005 Hollis House was completely renovated and restored as the new home of Society, a stylish restaurant bar-lounge for the fashionable set.
The second landmark at 303 and 309 are two Edwardian villas now known as Cottam Grove Hotel.
When it comes to property, Florida Road’s trademark is in high demand. Particularly commerical space, where size, shape and ambiance varies from converted streetside garages to an entire Victorian mansion.
Florida Road is highly accessible within a mere 5 minute drive away from the CBD. In the same close proximity one will find Sun Coast Casino, warm Indian Ocean beaches, Moses Mabhida Stadium, Kingsmead Cricket ground, Greyville racecourse, and several venues for golfing enthusiasts.
Florida Road was also chosen as name of the movie produced in 2009 by Sunworld Productions, focusing on the culturally diverse city of Durban, South Africa and features leading local and international actors.
